Psycholgical counseling has helped some of us become healthy, well-balanced stutterers. This kind of therapy can help us work on the shame, guilt and fears that often accompany stuttering. Psychiatrists and psychologists also can diagnose any mental health condition, such as depression, that may get in the way of working on stuttering. It may be be necessary to educate the psychotherapist about stuttering first, however, because some therapists still think stuttering is a purely psychological disorder. In the U.S., many SLPs who specialize in stuttering now work feelings as well as fluency, and for most of us that's all that's needed.
