The therapist didn’t seem to know anything about covert stammering. This was in Australia, and it might be the case that the SLP community isn’t so well informed over here. It’s probably significant that I didn’t come across the term “covert” until I spent some time in the US last year.

She took me through some exercises to try to slow my speech down. Not that my speech is that rapid, but the idea was to slow me down so much that I couldn’t stammer. I think both of us knew that it wasn’t going to have any effect. She said that everyone said it worked during the therapy session but was very hard to apply in practice. And it didn’t work. It had no effect at all. I probably went to see her 5 or 6 times —and that was it. I haven’t been to a therapist since.
