Your comment about ADHD and stuttering was of interest to me. A recent study by Blood G, Ridenour V, Qualls, & Hammer C (2003) reported a 5.9% co-occurence of ADD in children who stutter. In your experience, have you noted differences in the stuttering behaviors of children diagnosed with ADHD without hyperactivity? I pose this question because I work with a child who stutters who has been diagnosed with ADD. She does not present the features of cluttering. Her stuttering behaviors consist of blocks and word substitutions. I think the behaviors associated with ADD have had a significant impact on my client's communication. Her poor memory and organization skills and impulsivity have resulted in stress at home and in school which, in turn, has contributed to increased dysfluency.
I am concerned about prognosis because of the dynamics between these co-occuring disorders.
