Russ Hicks, Thank you for such a thorough description to the Iceberg Analogy. I have seen this picture before and I have actually shared it with clients who stutter, however I never would have been able to put it into such a comprehensive explanation prior to reading your paper. The approach you take to describe the physical makeup of the iceberg and how it relates to stuttering is most helpful when counseling PWS and or parents of PWS. The way you describe the “school of physics” makes it very understandable for a person (and/or clinician) to comprehend how important the emotional components are under the waterline. I hope other speech language pathologist share this iceberg analogy with their clients and take the time to deal with the psychological factors underlying stuttering, since it’s such an enormous aspect of stuttering treatment. Thank you for this valuable information, it has been very successful in the clinical setting.
- Sincerley Grateful clinician P.S. Congratulations on your Toastmasters recognition! I myself have attended many Toastmasters meetings in Mount Pleasant, Michigan and I believe it is a truly magnificent program.
