Wow is this touching. I bet this hit home when you read about the 18 year old who's parents looked away.

I had a severe stutter for more than 20 years and was a professional eye averter.

Your mom is accessing her kinesthetic/feeling state when looking down.

I would show her this article and have a heart-to-heart. You might start with: "Mom you often look down when I block. How do know when to do that?"
