This article was very enlightening as it relates to a diagnostic session I recently took part in. The client is a moderately mental retarded adult who was referred to our clinic for pragmatics, specifically lack of eye contact during conversation. Further testing of pragmatics revealed few, if any, deficits other than eye contact aversion. It was noted the client resorted to severe eye-rolling during times of excitability. Now that we have the data, I am faced with what next, and formulating some recommendation for therapy. Your insight and ability to place non-segmental aspects into words assists in helping me form my own conclusions. There certainly seems to be a "mind and body connection" to every aspect of language as well as an emotional commitment.
