Did you consider that the mostly positive reactions from listeners to the students during stuttering may have been that the students were not fully imitating stuttering behavior? They may consciously or subconsciously tended to imitate "easier" stuttering behaviors and proabably did not exhibit struggle behaviors that most real stutteres exhibit. This would have translated into being more socially acceptable. One comment in particular makes me think this might be the case. The woman who thought the pizza server was getting over a stammer.
