As it turns out, the students have the opportunity to practice in class prior to going out into the community. We discuss the fact that the average adult who stutters does so 10% of time. I point out to the students that some people may only stuttering 3% of time and others stutter 30% of the time. We work hard to have the students look and sound realistic as they are very concerned that someone will question whether they really stutter. This questioning has never happened.
It is also important to note that many persons who stutter do not exhibit grossly overt associated behaviors and still get reactions while some persons with a lot of associated behaviors may not get a reaction.
One final point that I think my students learned. The speaker brings a set of emotional expectations to the situations and may misinterpret a reaction as being related to their speech. However, without directly confronting the individual we don't know that every reaction is stuttering related.
