I understand your students fears all to well. I am currently enrolled in a stuttering course in my masters program. We had an assignment to stutter in 3 situations. This was a very scary situation for all of us to be in. However, I do feel that I learned a lot of things from it as did many of my classmates. I found your article and assingment very interesting. I liked that you included educating the public into your assignment. I think this is a great idea and may suggest it to my professor for her next class to do. Educating the public is one thing that we can do as clinicians as well as pseduo-stuttering to "feel" what our clients feel and to help them overcome the sometimes paralyzing fear they endure when in a public speaking situation. I also wanted to say that your students were very ingenous in coming up with all sorts of ways to observe the listeners of the stuttering...I especially enjoyed the bar job story and was outraged to hear how the student was treated.
