During the past few years I did have students in my course who stuttered. I tried to encourage them to not pseudostutter but enter into the situation and communicate. Because the student was entering into the situation with a different frame of reference (completing the assignment), they may or may not have stuttered. However, I wanted the student to focus on their own reactions, the reactions of others and their own feelings. When the situation was right, the student also shared a handout with a person in a store or at a restaurant and attempted some education about stuttering. I could have encouraged the students to fake stuttering in an attempt to give them a sense of more control; however, I knew this task was going to be difficult for those students who stutter and modified the project to better meet the students' needs.
