Woody and Janet A client shared recently that he has become obsessed with a constant introspection of his stuttering. He felt that he uses his stuttering as a window to the world and makes decisions based on how much control he thinks he will have in each specific moment. His predictions of future fluency are based on his past experiences. Unfortunately, the majority of these are negative and result in increased struggling and withdrawal. Your perspective of viewing stuttering as a series of “repeated social traumas” plays well with his thoughts and actions and may allow him to stop interpreting the present by the past. As always, thanks for a thought provoking paper!
