This is a very interesting paper, dealing with an area that has heretofore seemed kind of vague and impossible to change (self esteem) to me and to clients I have worked with. I appreciate how you specifically detail activities that can be challenging for the person who stutters, i.e, choosing to confront rather than avoid someone with whom we have a conflict, even though we may stutter; choosing to answer the phone instead of letting the machine pick it up, even though we may stutter; speaking up for our rights even though we may feel ashamed that we will stutter. These are specific ways in which we can make the choice to challenge ourselves, thereby increasing our self esteem (even if we stutter!). We detract from our self esteem when we give in to our fears and shame of stuttering, and choose to avoid situations rather than getting ourselves smack dab in the middle of challenging interactions. Thank you for this paper!
