Sophie, while your concerns are certainly valid, I think that at this stage it is important for you to prioritize helping your child to become verbal. It is really important that you seek treatment for your child as soon as possible. He seems to have a significant problem and there is a lot that can be done to help him. I would suggest that you seek treatment from a speech-language pathologist experienced in paediatrics, to help you define and understand how to help him acquire speech and language. It would be important to discuss your family history of stuttering and very helpful if the speech-language pathologist works within the framework of a demands-capacities model so that they are sensitive to your child's risk factors for stuttering. They will be able to adjust how demanding therapy is, but, for your son, learning to talk is your main priority right now. Hope this advice helps.
