I have never thought about stuttering in the way you describe it with words, but it is so true. It defies the saying that “the past predicts the future”,(from moment to moment at least) although it complies with “history repeats itself” for both fluency and stuttering. It is a phenomenon that causes a great deal of stress for both the person who stutters and the therapist. Striking a balance is so important, and there is no cookbook recipe. Thank you for this enlightening article. I will use it to help my clients better understand this phenomenon, and to keep myself on track
