All good questions, Katie! With regards to memory, the majority of my work is about how, through storytelling, we often, unknowingly, shape our own memories. It's kind of like how, when someone asks us how we feel about something new, we sometimes aren't sure until we begin talking about it, and our feelings emerge slowly, as we speak them into existence, aloud. I believe that the ways in which we communicate can, in this way, shape what we see, feel, even re-member. I break down that word on purpose to reveal its roots - to "re-member" means to "embody again"; my artwork, stuttering, is attempting to accent not only how we communicate, but how this storytelling can effect the stories themselves. These include our memories. With regards to your other question, I only mentioned Africa because I live there, and have for the past three years! I must admit that I do not know the statistics, tho I'd be interested to see them, given how most South Africans speak many more languages than other citizens of the world (we have 11 official languages here)...
