I had my adult client do an assignment in which he had to come up with a personal symbol to represent his stuttering, as well as his attitudes and beliefs about stuttering. He came the next week with an insightful metaphor involving a mountain. He related his stuttering to landslides, tripping on rocks, falling in dark caves, having to "come back down" the mountain after a weekend trip "up," the fatigue of hiking, etc. I was thrilled when he said that sometimes he would stop on a "hike" up the stuttering "mountain" to reflect and could appreciate the amazing view from so high up. I thought it was great that his metaphor for stuttering wasn't just about negative feelings, stress, or hard work.
