Yes, they have to be comfortable stuttering openly with you, the clinician, before he/she can be comfortable stuttering in front or acknowledging it to strangers. It's a slow but important process of acceptance. I do a lot of voluntary stuttering in the therapy room to help the client understand what is happening during a real stuttering moment. That way the client is also becoming more comfortable with his/her speech before you try to make changes in the speech.
