Thank you so much for this article. I worked in another field prior to starting grad school this semester and during the two years prior to starting school I had an incredibly difficult time. I found that because I was so fearful of not doing things perfectly that I became almost paralyzed in my work. It took a lot of time to really see how my views of myself and my work very much contrasted with those of my supervisors and colleagues (I very much was a “mind reader”). I was doing excellent work but no matter how much I was told this, I couldn’t believe it for myself. What do you think is the best way for me to work and identify with clients when their perfectionist disposition is preventing them from meeting their goals and do you have any suggestions for structuring goals with them to set them up for success? Additionally do you have any suggestions for how to get them to see when they have been successful? I know that being told I was “doing great” just didn’t cut it for me and so I was wondering if there were any other techniques to help a client who is a perfectionist see all of the good things they are doing. Thank you so much again for an article that really connected!
