Certainly there are kids that don't relate to these concepts. For the most part, little boys love them all. Kids up to age 6 or so relate very well to the competition "tactic", but with older kids, I think they relate better to reinforcement that takes into account good choice making, being good at communicating, being a good speech manager, etc. Most kids repsond well to "I like the way you are.... or "You are doing a good job at.....". Something I like to say to kids who make changes in stuttering while it is happening is "You are good at fixing. How did you get so good at the at?" I think in stuttering therapy we slps need to be so tuned into each individual child to see what works best. I have had some some little girls call easy talk "princess talking". I sometimes go with their ideas! I even have a little boy call his quiet, restricted speech "hunca munca talking" and he blames it on hunca munca the speech mouse! These kids can develop some very fun therapy ideas...that is how the speech monster was born.
