I am a graduate student at New York University and I enjoyed your piece on “Changing Attitudes in Children & Teens who stutter.” I like the treatment ideas that help to reduce negative attitudes associated with stuttering. I think it may be helpful to use such activities with young children perhaps even preschool age, to desensitize them from an early age. I especially like the activity that involves the individuals interacting with other people who stutter. Would this technique be able to be implemented with preschool children? If so, how would you implement this technique with preschoolers? Are there any other techniques that you mentioned in your article that would be useful for preschoolers? You briefly mentioned that changing attitudes involves not only the child/teen but the adults who surround the child. I also want to know if perhaps parental involvement is an important factor in changing attitudes in children who stutter and to what extent it can be included in these activities?
