David, I agree with you on 99% of everything you say. The 1% is that yes indeed, I HAVE met a few - VERY few mind you - absolutely covert stutterers. Most of them don't really stutter like we do, but their mental processes are similar but a thousand times more painful. I'm glad I'm (and you're) overt! I also understand your point about empowering and enabling. Uninformed SLPs who concentrate only on producing fluency can easily CREATE a covert stutterer. And that's tragic! I've seen it happen. "But he doesn't stutter any more!" they say. (Head banging against wall...!) That's why I think understanding the iceberg is absolutely CRITICAL to student SLPs. ... But this paper really isn't about covert stuttering. We can - and it may be fun to - talk about this endlessly. ... Right now I'm trying to get the stupid politics out of Stutt-L. Grrrrr....!!! What should we do with that albatross? Shoot it? Probably... ... Enjoy the rest of the conference, David!
