Hello Dr. Loriente, My name is Ashley Nichol and I am a Master’s student at New York University. I found your paper on the notion of Transfluency to be very enlightening. The notion of transfluency seems to demand a social revolution for both the stutterers and the society in which they live. How do you propose this revolution be ignited? How long to you think this reform will take until stuttering is truly demedicalized? Is it not it too idealistic to demand that within the community of transfluency the stutters will no longer worry about their speech, while the society must inhibit their disapproval and their so-called “irrational beliefs”? Furthermore, in the part of your paper regarding treatment you state that there are numerous “treatments” for stuttering. However, practically all of the stutterers and clinicians have experienced failure of these treatments. If that is the case, why would these educated therapists still be attempting to treat this incurable disorder? Lastly, in the closing part of the treatment section you state that there have been very few “significant” results for method of treatment; which therefore suggests that there have been results that were most likely positive. Why then are these results not taken and then further developed and studied? If there is a chance at advancement in treatment, why not take the leap of faith? After all, is that not what you are suggesting for stutterers and society to do by accepting the terms of transfluency? Thank you for your time. I truly enjoyed reading your article. Regards, Ashley Nichol
