First I would like to say that I found the concept of demedicalizing stuttering to be extremely interesting. To be honest, I was quite shocked to discover society once considered the will to be a free a mental illness. I have always known that societal views were not always correct, but learning some of the now “normal” behaviors that used to be considered as mental illnesses really caught my attention. As a current graduate student in speech-language pathology at West Virginia University, what can future speech-language pathologists do to help spread the notion of transfluency and to reduce the view of stuttering as a social stigma?
