Hello Courtney, Great to hear from you. The implications for intervention at Australian universities are very large if a PWS does choose to ask for help from a disability unit. For a student to receive help they must provide some form of proof that they do indeed have a disability. This is emerging from my study to be a problematic issue. Once they are accepted as being eligible to receive help from disability services then they are able to discuss and negotiate interaction, assessment and participation issues. Without receiving formal help from a disability unit a student would have to try to approach the issue personally with any other university staff involved. The whole process though is meant to be handled in a very private manner with the student guiding the officer through the process. In therapy I would 100% suggest to a student who stutters to seek the help that is available. Again they will not be alone and disability services units normally cover a wide spectrum of issues and problems. The student could still ask disability services for help but personally still not align themselves with the term. In my opinion if the help is out there and if you think it will aid you then you should be accessing it beyond any issues of pride or labelling.
