The Fluency Challenge seems to present an interesting approach to therapy. I believe this is an easy way for clinicians to explore the underlying “goals” of the client. I am a graduate student in an advanced stuttering course, and we spend a great deal of time discussing the person first terminology. We were told that recently people began using a person who stutters instead of a stutterer to describe someone with the disorder. It is thought to reduce the stigma and negative feelings affiliated with the term stutterer. My question to you is, do you think clinicians use the term fluency instead of stuttering because of the emotional stigma the term stuttering carries? If so, have you noticed a change in the attitudes of clients after replacing the word fluency?
