Marwa, thanks for writing. You ask, “In regards to the challenge, have you seen changes in peoples attitudes towards stuttering after The Fluency Challenge?” I view the Fluency Challenge more as an ongoing way to explore language and thoughts about stuttering rather than a before and after treatment. But yes, I do tend to see a noticeable difference in how some people explore and think about stuttering. For example, several people I work with will “catch” themselves using words such as “fluency” and stop and ask themselves what they mean. They are sometimes surprised to figure out what they really mean. For example, over several sessions one client realized that sometimes when she uses the term “fluency” she is often just referring to doing something active with her stuttering. She figured out that for her, it is really important that she is proactive in dealing with her speech. She realized that sometimes when she says “I want to be fluent” she was really thinking, “I want to do something active with my stuttering.”
