Hello. I have mixed feelings about A Fish Called Wanda and would like to offer my perspective. On one hand I share your feeling that the scene where Kline's character relentlessly teases Palin's character is cruel and uncalled for. It was painful to watch. I have come to a different opinion, however, over the years. In the movie, Kline's character was meant to be seen as a jerk and not a role model to revere. Personally I can accept and appreciate humor when it is meant to tell the viewer that "this kind of unacceptable behavior is only seen in jerks." The scene makes Kline's character look like an ignorant idiot. That makes it forgivable to me. Also, Michael Palin's father was a severe stutterer. I do not believe that he would want to make fun of people who stutter (then again, maybe his famous Michael Palin Centre for Stammering Children was founded out of guilt!) Just a thought...
