Your excellent article has provoked some great discussion. I am suspicious of one-trick ponies. However, I hesitate to dismiss any stuttering treatment because all of them -- even some pretty goofy ones -- worked at least once for somebody. I'm glad you noted the peer support benefit of the McGuire Program: That may be why a number of the program's graduates have continued to participate in stuttering support. The program initially got a cult-like reputation because some of the McGuiristas were unusually aggressive in proselytizing , but that has diminished over the years. This approach certainly merits more research, and some of the McGuire techniques may be worth adopting by mainstream clinicians to meet the individual needs of some people who stutter.
