Hi Erin, I like to work on fears and avoidances first and then introduce fluency techniques. The best tool I have is the "Stuttering Survey" to get an older child beginning about 8 or 9 years to advertise that they stutter. Please send me an email at jjjudithe@msn.com and I will send you the Stuttering Survey. At times, initially, I have met people who stutter that are very discouraged by not being able to have "any fluency". With stutterers like this, I may begin with choral reading just to prove to them that they have a capacity for more fluent speech. When "stuttering controls" are finally presented, I spend a lot of time talking about how they will not work if fears and avoidances are present. Some people don't like this approach and then I just tell them that we are not a good match to work together. J-J-Judith
