I laughed as I read your analogy and its application to facilitating an NSA meeting. Though I think you have a valid point, I suspect that you underrate your (and Lee's) contribution to the facilitation process. You both seem to have the ability to put a topic on the table (or, throw out that chicken, I should say), and then allow the group to go with it. Your open, easy attitude has something to do with why it works so well for you.
You're right in pointing out that the alligators are the most important thing. The alligators in your anecdote knew that the man was going to be bringing them something good to eat, and so they were ready to go for it. I suspect that the members of your NSA chapter know they have leadership who care about them AND who will be bringing along a pretty nice chicken.
