Steve, I think the emphasis is on someone who is comfortable with their skills to hide it, but obviously never comfortable with the dysfluency. When you successfuly "flee" a threatening situation, there's an immediate sense of euphoria that "it worked!" However, in the immediate wake of that euphoria is the sense of diminishment and shame that follows. For some coverts, that "ability" to successfully get around, avoid or flee those fearful situations becomes an odd and perverse source of pride at that secret skill. But you're certainly right in that in the long term, it's destructive and a negative feeling that never goes away when you attempt to deceive. If ever there was a great mantra for coverts, "What a web we weave, when at first we attempt to deceive."
