Bob, Perhaps instead of searching for another profession to "take over expertise in stuttering" we should be investigating what our "expertise" can offer other professions. Psychiatrists, psychologists and neurologists have attempted for years to employ their pharmacological and talk-therapy bag of tricks on people who stutter with little success. This is most likely a result of their limited knowledge and training on stuttering.
Stuttering specialists are a unique breed who pull techniques and theories from many areas. It may be time for us to flex our muscles and try our bag of tricks on their turf. So many disorders have a fluency component (Tourette Syndrome, Epilepsy Autism etc. ) By demonstrating how effective stuttering techniques can be with these other disorders, we may be increasing our value in the workplace.
