To be honest, I see very little difference between "Then" and "Now." Political Correctness may have lessened some of the current terminology, but the message(s) remain the same.

Not much will change as long as stutterers believe that there IS a "cure." They'll continue to chase the Fluency God and believe that the therapy didn't fail -- they did -- and search for the next carrot.

Fortunately, times seem to be changing. With the intermixing of the world's cultures, few regions now speak un-accented language. With the mixture of languages comes a willingness to accept speech that is not "perfect." This may have unintended benefits for people who stutter. They may become less sensitive to their disfluencies, thus become more relaxed with their speech, and thus become less disfluent!
