I read the original letter this past summer and was, of course, shocked and dismayed. I’m thinking that perhaps the value of the letter is now in the backlash that has come in it’s wake. The “guys in the white hats” now have the opportunity to speak loudly and clearly about issues that were previously understood to be there but not often acknowledged. As an SLP it took me a long time to get it; longer than it took for me to get it in my role as the parent of a child who stutters. Now I’m no longer afraid of stuttering, and this seems to be my first gift to a parent I meet who has a child who stutters. The second gift is when I tell a parent that if the child continues to stutter he or she can live a normal life, and the reason I know this is because of people like you, Bob. So don’t stop stuttering; it would be a disservice to all the children out there, and their parents, who need to know that stuttering is ok no matter who you are or what you do.
