I really enjoyed this piece. A Jekyll and Hyde existence is one I attempted for more than 20 years- concealing stuttering at any cost.
The McClure quote at the end rocked my world. "Freedom is to speak. And I fear to form what is air and may be made in a minute." THis hit me as I realize the meaning I gave a block and the fear of that stuttering moment (what my air may make in a minute). My myriad of avoidance tricks, refusal to speak in class, and MANY other covert issues were related to this anxiety about what was about to happen- a potential block. My recovery was dependent on accepting what my air may make in a minute. Welcoming a block and processing the anxiety through me.
