Thanks for your question. The answer: Absolutely not! In fact I still do occasionally speak so fast that even my own mother has said, "Slow down...so I can understand you." That usually happens when I'm excited about something or trying too hard to get my point across (I also tend to talk louder at those times too, but that's another story.) No, my talking fast was NOT an intentional technique -- it just happened. We used to call it a "secondary mannerism" back then (my other method was to "cough" right before I knew I was going to block...which could "cough" be really "cough" annoying "cough.") What was also behind my rapid rate of speech, besides perhaps an attempt to overcome stuttering, is (I believe) an ADD-like hyperness (not diagnosed, just assuming) to my speech. So, yes, taking it "slow n' easy" are always best, I'd think, at least for me. Any suggestions to aid me in this continuing path to speech improvement? (I'm always trying to get better at it and the object lesson for others should be that we ALL can use improvement in how we speak, no matter how facile we might seem to others.)
