HI,
I don't avoid situations which are stressful. I have stuttered with verying degrees of severity in all sorts of situations.
Maybe the article is misrepresentative. Whilst my stuttering has been very severe at certains in my life , it has never dominated my way of living. I came from a very disadvantaged childhood background and , quite frankly, could not afford the luxury of continual handwringing, avoiding, and word substitution.
So no, I do not avoid certain people or situations. The reverse is probably true. The fact that I leave the advocating for Mattie to Sharon is because she is so good at it. It's only since I have been in contact with people who put such an emphasis on 'non-avoidance' that I have been somehow pointing the finger at myself.
