Dr.Carrasco using your stethescope to listen back to your speech is a classic form of "auditory sidetone".I'm not very clear whether the stethescope acts as an auditory distraction, or a simulation of chorale speaking . It has the effect of making the speaker use more volitional speech patterns (i.e. graded, easy, controlled tempo, slower) that facilitates fluency. Stuttering acts like an action-induced dystonic myospasm that can be altered by speech "sensorimotor" tricks not unlike other focal dystonic symptoms.
