Chantel, The heightened sensitivity does impact the child who stutters (CWS) as Guitar explains in his 1998 text. The heightened sensitivity also influences the CWS to be very responsive to skillful treatment. Speech therapy needs to have a desensitization component throughout the process. In a very large percentage of my clients, temperamentally sensitive children who stutter, I have been able to assist them successfully to deal with their stuttering and associated attitudes. They are a beautiful group with which to work, and I find the generalization process a pleasant challenge with these children. I do give workshops assisting professionals to work effectively with CWS. Libby
