In our paper, I hope it is clear that we were not talking about stuttering that occurs as a consequence of a traumatic episode. There are such cases, as the literature shows, where a "psychological" (I use quotes because all traumas are both physical and psychological)event of traumatic severity has resulted in sudden, adult onset of stuttering. Typically, the stuttering resolves rather easily as the trauma is dealt with through psychotherapy.
What we were suggesting is something else -- that garden variety, developmental stuttering resembles Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in its pattern of development and in some of its symptoms. The similarity is close enough to see stuttering as a version of PTSD. This, in turn, has implications for remediation.
