Alan, a mature adult, somewhat wishes he had realized only sooner that it is okay to talk even if he is a person who stutters. Similarly if someone had a limp, it is still okay to walk. Or, if someone had a lower voice, it's still okay to sing. The author has successfully realized that everyone is unique and has his/her own area of weakness. However, he is first a man, an athlete, and a coin collector among other abilities/traits he possesses. As a new graduate student, I have just recently learned (and am slowly realizing) that stuttering is not about the blocks consisting of hesitations and prolongations. It is about silence. But this silence is a choice. No one should feel forced to be silent. No one should have to live life with just echoes ringing in their head. Stutterer or not, s/he should be free to have their voice, ideas, and dreams heard.
