Linda, Thank you for your comments. We agree that there is a need for SLPs already working in the field to understand the importance of counseling skills in their treatment of individuals with communication impairments. Although ASHA does not require a course in counseling, the new ASHA standards require that students demonstrate competency in the area of counseling. In addition, the new ASHA regulations for maintaining the CCC require continuing education. We hope that SLPs will choose to engage in continuing education in counseling.
