Thank you for your question, Neena. It is not our intention to suggest that clinician-counselors stop acting as information givers. We suggest, instead, that clinician-counselors engage in both types of counseling. There are some issues that are information-based and it is certainly our role to provide information to parents when information is what they need. However, there are many issues that parents can resolve on their own or with the support of other parents of children who stutter. Our role in this type of interaction is to facilitate problem-solving by parents. It is our hope that one day clinical training will include the domain of counseling in all academic programs for speech-language pathology and audiology.
