Sarah...Thanks for your questions and comments. Joe D's response has me chuckling quite a bit as I write this. Joe D. -- Your the best! :)....I am not know for my PC in responding , and I am in constant development of learning to be PC....There are those who will say I am never going to get there!!! But I'm trying!!!! That being said, the 80% # I am sure is from one of my posts in another article here in the conference. A number of professionals at this years SID #4 leadership conference reported this. I agree with Joe totally regarding his comments about harping on constant articulation correction...That will not cause stuttering. I do believe that if you are a child who really "stutters", and have articulation problems, investing time in directly correcting artic errors runs a great risk of increasing communication apprehension, avoidance and deepening self-esteem issues for the child. Most children will "grow out" of artic problems...even without direct therapy. Real Stuttering, you will not out grow....If you stutter, you stutter. Stuttering does not reveal itself over night....Time is the great revealer regarding if a child really stutters. If a child presents to me with Dysfluency and artic concerns, I focus on listening....You can influence artic development through very effective indirect ways. Dysfluency can be significantly decreased by "Therapuetic Listening" ...Stuttering can also be greatly decreased by employing "Therapuetic Listening" as a base of therapy. I also agree with Joe that listener reactions alone will not cause people to become "real" stutterer's. Parent's do not cause stuttering. I do not know what causes stuttering....I do know what increases it to occur, and I also know what decreses it. To me, if you are a PWS, talking/increasing effective communication are very realistic and attainable goals! Stopping, controlling, or curing real stuttering are unrealistic goals. At least that has been my experience both as a PWS and as a professional. I believe if you as a professional are active in the support groups available to PWS...NSA - FRIENDS... you will find this to be true. Good luck in your studies Sarah. And Joe D.-----don't get to anxious over there....I don't want you to start being dysfluent over my pc skills!!!! ;) !
