Dear Dori, Thank you for this paper. I will copy it and give it to the families I see. I am an SLP and I am writing to ask you for advice about how to help parents along the path of becoming more involved in their childrens' therapy. If a reference library had been available to you from the start, would you have used it? Did you have to come to a point at which you were ready to get down and learn about stuttering? I have a heck of a time getting some parents to meet with me for informational purposes. I've run a parent group for several years and attendance is never consistent. I have it at my home now so that if no one shows, I haven't wasted my time driving to another location. I've given up chasing down parents. Now, I make myself and my materials available and wait. That way, the few parents who take the initiative to make use of my time turn out to be the ones who are really worth my effort. They are really fun and often give me articles to read that I hadn't come across myself. They have become the students ready for a teacher. What are your recommendations for getting parents to attend a monthly parent group on a regular basis. What would you want out of such a group? Thank you.
