Hi Angela, You're asking such a good question. I am glad to see that you are thinking from the clients' perspectives, specifically about clients' motivation. I have found that nothing is as motivating as success itself (i.e., success begets success). You can tell the clients that they are able, but they must experience success themselves in order for them to believe it. When they believe it from their own experience, motivation no longer seems to be a problem. In treatment, therefore, I create opportunities for the client to experience fluency success and a positive attitude about oneself as a person and as a communicator. This is a very exciting and rewarding process, for the client and the clinician. What would I say to them? I would remind them that what is difficult to achieve takes a long time to accomplish; what seems impossible might take even longer. Hope this helps. Good luck to you. David
