Great question Michele. It is up to the speaker to determine if he or she wants to discuss the use of voluntary stuttering with others. In my opinion, the speaker should consider informing friends and family about voluntary stuttering to help them better understand the disorder. Also, explaining voluntary stuttering to friends and relatives is a good way for the stutterer to “advertise” (be open about) stuttering. Personally, I do not see the benefit in stutterers informing strangers such as shop owners that they are using voluntary stuttering. In fact, doing so may come across as simply odd.
