M. Suarez, thanks for writing. You ask, “Is there a way to ‘smoothly’ correct myself when accidentally using negative language (e.g. that was a bad one)?” Sure! Try saying (with a smile), “By a bad stutter, I meant a good stutter” or “Sometimes I make the mistake of saying ‘That was a bad one’ when I really mean, ‘That sure was a good one!’” Making a “mistake” is not such a bad thing because it gives you the opportunity to directly discuss positive, productive and descriptive language with your clients.
