Paige, You bring up a good point. How much does a clinician need to share about themselves in therapy. While this will change depending on the specifics of each situation, I generally feel that one can acknowledge a given emotion and even relate that they have felt that way in the past without sharing too much about themselves. If a specific anecdote or situation from the clinician's life is being used to further the client's understanding than I think it is a useful clinical tool. However, clinicians should avoid working on their own issues in a session and remember that it is about the client.
