Hi Alan, I’ve always enjoyed you writing and it occurred to me that I have yet to hear one of your presentations. We will have to work it out so that we are at the same conference one of these days so we can be in each other’s audience. I think that I was a reasonably sensitive person prior to realizing that I was a person who stuttered. Stuttering didn’t become a problem for me until I was in about the 6th or 7th grade, something that I’ve heard a number of people indicate. Interesting of course, since the mean age of onset for developmental stuttering is 33 months. I may have been stuttering but not enough for anyone to point it out to me or for it to become a problem. I suspect it would be interesting to obtain more information on this. My decision to enter the field was a direct result of my therapy experiences, especially in group therapy, as I observed others cope with their stuttering and achieve success. Had I not stuttered I would have considered several other fields including psychology and criminal justince/law enforcement (oddly enough). I also agree with you that the best part of the journey are the experiences and the people along the way rather than any particular destination. I really believe in the importance of being curious about many things and that when we are ready for someone or something, it is very likely to appear.
